Project Elleven: Daniel Gets a Chance to Walk

Daniel is a five year old boy who can hardly walk. From birth Daniel was very sick and his mother Irena had been staying at the hospital for eight months out of the year, never leaving his side. During all this time nobody could really help Daniel. He didn’t walk, talk or even move properly.


Daniel’s mother exhausted every resource she had trying to help her child. The two of them went to specialized hospitals, tried different massage techniques, therapies, and pills. None of them had any effect. When every possibility had been tried, Irena began to loose all hope. Things even took a turn for the worse when her husband left, leaving Irena to battle Daniel’s condition on her own.


For almost a full year Irena didn’t do anything…couldn’t do anything. She was left with only despair. However, hope came last summer when a woman told Irena about a new method being performed by a group of Russian doctors who specialize in helping even the most hopeless of cases. Irena owed it to her son to try one last time. She borrowed money and waited until the doctors came to the Ukraine. They performed an operation on Daniel and after a month of rehabilitation he made his first step. It was a real miracle!

Throughout the course of a year, Daniel started to walk a little bit and went to a special kindergarten where he learned to say some words and communicate with other children. Now he is very active and an incredibly kind boy. To make him healthy it is necessary to perform one more operation which will help Daniel mover his arms and hands properly. The 1% project has decided to pay for the operation which will take place at the end of July. We all hope it will be just as successful as the last one. Daniel’s mother and grandmother are of course overjoyed to have one more chance to make Daniel an active and happy young boy.

I wished Daniel good luck and made an appointment to see him again in August. We’ll get a chance to meet with his family once more and see the results of the operation.
