Project Twelve: Re-Visiting Some Old Friends

In the Ukraine, December 2nd is a day set aside for the partly disabled people of the region. Last year we made presents for the kids in kindergarten with mental problems (check project #9). This year I wanted to do something special again.

I asked the director how we can help them this time around and she proposed we buy the new medical equipment that is so desperately needed. In this case it was the ultra-violet ray machine. The old one had been out of order for a long time and they didn’t have the ability to cure children from winter diseases during the cold seasons of the year.

The purpose of the ultra-violet machine is to heat children’s organs. Usually it is used during winter time when children get the flue and other viruses very often due to a weakening of the immune system. Also, it is useful for children to heat the partly disable part of the body (arms, legs, etc).

Unfortunately I couldn’t take a picture of the children that benefit from the use of this machine due largely to the fact that the kids had an early bed-time.

For the New Year we are planning to make another party for the kids, similar to what we did last year. We got an early start by decorating and changing the curtains in the hall of the kindergarten. You will be able to see the changes in the pictures from the New Year Clown Show at the next project update.

I’m sure we made a difference because the kindergarten couldn’t afford this equipment by themselves.

P.S. – I also want to remind you that we continue our Social Workers Project (Project 10).

Sergey, a 32 year old man in a wheel-chair, cannot move or speak. Our social work Sasha helps him in his everyday needs, because Sergey’s mother cannot do it by herself. Also, the most important goal of Sasha is to teach Sergey to use the computer and Internet in order to communicate with people.

During the last 6 months of our social workers job, all the individuals they worked with became more confident and communicable. Their life routines became more various and their parents are happy to see that change. They really appreciate this possibility of having social workers that we provided for them.

These people do need our participation in their difficult lives, so I believe that we will help them as long as possible!
