Project Six: Taking The Long View
The Hegre charity initiative takes a new turn with this new project: rather than helping a family with some small necessity in life, we are taking the long view and assisting two promising young athletes.
The project concerns the family Petrovs, having many children, with a low level of income. The family consists of seven people: mother, father, two sons, Dima - 17 years old and Misha - 4 years old; two daughters, Natasha - 14 years old and Ann - 10 years old, and finally grandmother. All of them live in a three-room flat, which is in bad condition and needs repair, with old furniture. Their friends and relatives are in the same circle of society, and are trying to help them in any way, mostly with second-hand clothes.
The mother's name is Petrova Ludmila and she is the only working person in the family. She works a 12 hour day, from 9:00 in the morning until 9.00 at night, in order to earn a living and to make enough money for school accessories and sports equipment for the children.
Petrova Ludmila's daughters are studying at school and practicing their skiing. At the moment they have good results: they both have diplomas from their skiing club and also they won medals and prizes last season. What's more, their coaches pin their hopes on them for the future. Though they find time to study hard at school, they attend coaching six days a week. The only problem is their equipment. They can only acquire second-hand equipment and that isn't always good enough to achieve the results they are capable of, and poor equipment can be dangerous.
When I met with Petrova Ludmila to speak about the 1% Charity initiative, the only thing she wanted was to buy new skiing equipment for the girls. She is completely behind them and, she is right, because to spend time on coaching is good for their health and safer for them than to fall under the negative influences of the street. The girls skiing also sets a good example for their small brother Misha.
I went to see the girls next day after meeting with their mother and firstly they couldn't believe that it is possible to receive new equipment for free. After talking for a while, we went to several specialist shops in Kiev. Only in the evening did we find the shop where they could select the equipment they needed. Next day we went there to buy everything. The girls are very happy and promise to gain lots more awards.
Their parents are very grateful to the members of Hegre-Archives who have created this fund and make such things possible.
