Software: Final Cut Pro

Apple’s tag line for Final Cut Pro bodily states, “Edit Everything – Wait for Nothing.” Normally I dismiss such marketing tag lines as silly bravado but when it comes to Final Cut Pro this is not an idle boast. The sheer range of video formats and codec’s that Final Cut Pro can edit is mind-boggling, which is of course good for Hegre-Art as we have a lot of video formats for our members to choose from.

Final Cut Pro Final Cut is a video-editing and -compositing program. Just like Photoshop, the software works with layers only in this case they are separated out into frames, but with a richer variety of file formats. Each layered frame is then organized into a long sequence, with layers containing audio, text or an image with an alpha channel. The software is heavily geared toward turning film makers like me into full fledged content providers, and not simply a media enthusiast.

One of Final Cut Pro’s best and most useful qualities is that it is completely independent from the source quality video. If I film something in say, HDV for example, the film stays in HDV and I’m not forced to dummy down the quality simply for the ease of editing it on my Mac. That means I can easily offer broadcast quality films directly over the internet, or if I wanted to, direct to television or projection systems as well.

Much like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro is not a software package one can just simply install and hit the ground running with. It takes a high degree of skill and education to master, and there are many video editing professionals who spend their entire careers learning the ins and outs of the software. There are layers upon layers of tricks, tools, and effects one can learn to master the software. Everyday is a new learning experience, and a Final Cut Pro expert must be receptive to learning new things all the time, otherwise they will quickly fall behind other professionals working with the software.

Also, as one would expect, Final Cut Pro is a memory hog. Of course, you can’t really blame the software for that; it’s more the fault of the original source material. Editing still pictures takes a massive amount of memory and full motion video takes up even more. A LOT more. This is the kind of software that will really test the limits of your computer hardware.

Movie editing is not an easy task. Keeping a film sequence tight and interesting with a good flow of events is important in a good film, especially in this day and age when people tend to loose patience quickly. Final Cut Pro helps me to achieve that with my films and I’m happy to say I’ll be using it for a long time to come.
