EQUIPMENT

Accessories: Gitzo Tripod G1288

For a lot of photographers who shoot in a 35mm format, a tripod is a love it or hate it type of tool. It of course allows for steadier shooting which translates to sharper images but isn’t completely necessary when using a format designed for quick shooting, snapshots, or photo journalism outlets. However, if you’re a photographer like me who shoots in Medium Format, a tripod quickly becomes your best friend.

Gitzo Tripod G1288 Now I’m not going to deny that a tripod can be an awkward piece of equipment at times, and in some cases really slows down the shooting process. Adjusting a tripod to get the right camera angle is often frustrating not to mention the idea of carrying around yet one more piece of equipment that is both heavy and cumbersome. It is with these thoughts in mind that I looked toward Gitzo when purchasing my tripod and it’s a choice I’ve never regretted.

First and foremost, Gitzo tripods are light weight when compared to other professional grade tripod units. This makes a huge difference for me when I’m trying to do a shoot on location that requires a bit of walking before I get there. Beaches, mountain ranges, lakes, rivers; these aren’t the kind of spots I can simply drive the car up to, park, and start shooting away. Complicate the matter even further with the fact that I shoot nudes and I better make sure I’m shooting somewhere off the beaten path if you will. Having a tripod that isn’t going to weigh me down is essential in my line of work.

Now when I say light weight, in a lot of cases when it comes to tripods that also means cheap quality. Not so at all with Gitzo. The Carbon Fibre construction is solid and well assembled. My H1 isn’t exactly a light weight camera and the Gitzo holds it steady very nicely, even on uneven surfaces. Given the cost and manner in which I depend on my camera, I’m not about to place it on top of a tripod I don’t feel 100% confident about.

The engineers behind the Gitzo G1288 did an excellent job putting together a tripod that collapses and adjusts with a minimal amount of effort. I’ve used tripods before that where so complicated I felt like I needed a physics degree just to set them up. Those are the kind of tripods that people tend to really hate and I can’t say I blame them. Kudos to Gitzo for actually keeping the photographer in mind with their design specs.
