BUENOS AIRES - A EUROPE OUT OF FOCUS!

South American Style

The very name Buenos Aires conjures up romantic thoughts and images. Good food, romantic people, and it was of course in Argentina where they invented tango. Need one really say any more?

Buenos Aires is complex, energetic, seductive, a port city that grew out of the small towns peopled by immigrants from all over Europe, and today there are as many Italian and German surnames as there are Spanish - Spanish alegre, Italian style, German organization? Whatever. It works. The city is throbbing, vibrant, sexy. It's easy to imagine anything and everything might happen. And it usually does.

There's also a great cultural heritage: El Teatro Colon is one of the world's finest opera houses and the Spanish Colonial architecture with its blend of Italian detailing and graceful French Classicism is unique, beguiling and totally classy. Alongside the Victorian houses built by the first English settlers are dusty antique shops and exotic tango bars all mirrored majestically in the glass skyscrapers of international corporations.

Hegre's travels in Brazil have unearthed some of the most beautiful women in the world and he set out with Luba for Argentina with the same optimism.

All Settled In and Ready to Shoot!

All Settled In and Ready to Shoot!

When porters see me arriving at airports they rub their hands with glee and start thinking about where they're going to take their wife out to dinner that night.

As a photographer traveling overweight goes with the territory. And those silver cases filled with cameras, lighting, light-meters, computers and props weigh so much you need a team of porters to shift them, money well spent if you want to shoot without a dislocated shoulder and something learned from long, often painful experience.

In the old days after graduating in the United States and during my first journeys in Eastern Europe, I lugged everything I could carry in a shoulder bag and though it was fun and functional shooting on the run, you need the right tool for the job to get the best results. The more you get tooled up, the more you have to tote around in that shoulder bag and one day you say to yourself, it's time to settle down and get a studio.

But you can't travel with your studio on your back and when Luba and I set out for Argentina I was so concerned making sure I didn't forget anything, it went out of my mind that it was mid-winter in the Southern Hemisphere. We touched down at six on a bitter cold morning, Luba had a big red shawl but I was wearing nothing but a tee-shirt, cargo pants and bare feet. It was freezing. "First thing we have to do is go shopping," I said to Luba, and of course her sleepy eyes lit up.

What was pleasantly warming was the welcome committee at the airport, the people who had invited us to do a shoot in the Argentine capital all waiting with bright smiles and good English. I'd read in the Buenos Aires Time Out that making friends in Argentina "is a process that can take anywhere up to ten minutes." First impressions, the claim was right on.

The morning was waking as we drove into the city, the sun low in the sky and putting a silvery blue tinge of light on the glass in the skyscrapers. We passed the famous Teatro Colon, rode down streets that looked more European than South American and finally checked into the Faena Hotel, a modern place with the architect's hand in every corner, thick velvet curtains on every window and the 38-year-old Señor Faena with his partner Philippe Starck making sure we had everything we needed. In the bullring, when the matador does a good pass with the bull its called a good faena, a good job, and Señor Faena has brought the quality to bare on the hotel that carries his name.

We grabbed a few hours sleep, hit the shopping malls at midday and returned to the Faena snug in angora sweaters, new jeans and gaucho boots; when in Rome you do as the Romans. In Argentina a touch of the cowboy prepares you for the traditional big lunch: fish for me, and a plate of the best beef grown anywhere on the planet for hungry Luba. Oh, yeah, and a glass of Argentine red; I'm partial to a good Rioja, but these new world wines are growing on me.

Casting was set for three o’clock and the bell boys had a hard time – not to say a great time - controlling the traffic coming up to our room. I was pleased there were so many girls who wanted to strut there stuff, it's what I expected from Buenos Aires, but while true Evitas are as rare as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it's the search that makes it all worthwhile.

Hasta mañana.

Petter

Working With a Photographers Dream

Working With a Photographers Dream

When you work in the tropics, as I have done in Brazil, you're hot and sweaty when you go from one place to another, and you're hot and sweaty when you come to do the shoot.

When it's cold outside, it takes me a while to warm up under the lights and it takes the model even longer. They're usually naked, after all. It takes time to get into it, get the feel and flow of the shoot, but the results are often more interesting, deeper in some way, the mood changing as the temperature rises.

Argentina and Brazil in their opposite seasons offer different circumstances, but in one way they turned out to be very similar indeed: both staunchly Catholic, both that mixture of the old fashioned and ultra-modern, and in both countries the same reluctance to do nudes; microscopic, postage stamp sized bikinis, they can't get enough of them, but there's still a taboo on nature's best garment, the nude.

The shoot planned for today had already been set up through an online pre- casting. Photographers are a strange breed: we may be a bit jealous of each other, it's natural when you have the same passions as well as the same profession, but we do like to help each other when we can. That was certainly the case with my friend Walter Bosque, a lens man from Argentine's Cordoba, who was generous enough to offer me one of his best models.

He'd given her a big build up, always dangerous, but every word turned out to be true, and not only was she hip to the whole new nude revolution, she was just the kind of model I like to work with: petite and beautiful with positive energy and a charming smile.

We started off shooting at the hotel, an interesting location with the red velvet curtains and colonial style interior making a moody backdrop. It was the kind of place I could imagine Helmut Newton shooting in and anywhere that's good enough for Helmut is good enough for me.

In the Argentine everyone dances the tango. Girls walking down the street seem to be doing the tango. You see them practicing in the parks and open plazas, not merely a passion but an obsession that describes perfectly the exuberant spirit of the people. My model had that spirit, easy going, open and just a dream to work with. We moved from the hotel to the agency premises where another model was waiting for a casting. She joined the shoot; we ended up renting the agency's studio and worked there until they closed for the day.

Agencies when you first approach them are always very positive, but when it comes down to the actual casting, they just send old glam models that don’t have the energy I’m looking for – the energy that bring life into the photographs. Still, this turned out ton be a good day with some interesting shots and there are plenty of appointments in the diary for the coming week. With our supportive local team I am confident we'll crack it.

More Casting and a Little R&R

More Casting and a Little R&R

I referred to the local team in yesterday's report and should make special mention of Martin and Pancho, new friends who have been unbelievably helpful in my search for models and locations.

It is thanks to them that an astonishing variety of girls flocked like tropical birds into today's castings, so many girls, so little time, so few cameras! When they pour in like a rain storm you get spoiled for choice so it's up to all you surfers out there to let me know your favorites from the day one and day three photo sets. I have pretty much made up my mind, but input is always appreciated. The girl booked for tomorrow, incidentally, is shown here wearing blue panties. I'll say no more.

Between all the hard work measuring, judging and adjudicating models, when we're not repeatedly explaining the way we work and the kind of photos we produce, we manage to find some time to enjoy the city. And there's a lot to enjoy in Buenos Aires, from the smoky tango bars to the stunning architecture and scenery to make a photographer's eyes go pop.

Our hotel is located in a part of the newly restored dockland area with its flashy restaurants and high rent apartments. We're only a few minutes walk from the famous Puente de la Mujur (Bridge of the Lady) in Puerto Madero, and once you cross the bridge the city districts are small and highly individualized, each with its own characteristics, colors and forms.

El Puente de la Mujer is such a magnificent bridge I could think of no greater beauty to illustrate it than my own mujer, Luba. I like to think of it as one lady in front of another.

Say Hello to Jaqui

Say Hello to Jaqui

Forgive my excitement. But this is what the expeditions to far flung places is all about: discovery, unearthing that rare precious jewel, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, which I may have mentioned the other day. I found it.

Her name is Jaqui, an 18 year old, tall and slender, dark haired, milk white skinned beauty. Without a doubt a true girl from Buenos Aires. A true Hegre Girl.

I picked Jaqui from the day one casting and wow did she deliver. Totally uninhibited, she proudly showed off her naked truth, and I have tons of material, literally thousands of images in the most incredible settings.

I can’t wait to show you these images, and being an unusually warm morning I had her pose outside on a terrace in a district they call Palermo Hollywood, with Palermo SoHo around the corner, a place which lives up to its name with cool lofts, global cuisine, funky boutiques and new production studios.

This part of the city has such a buzz I can imagine taking a loft and living here. This trip is really starting to feel good. And it's not just the weather. I feel at home, which is weird (especially as I'm Norwegian), but here I am in South America and it seems like I'm in Europe. Taking a walk in Buenos Aires is like strolling through Madrid or Rome or Berlin, and the combination creates the illusion that it's not just European, but more European.

Of course, when you combine the cuisine of Spain and Italy with German elegance (and a touch of cream), the food is to die for. I don’t eat red meat, but Luba is feasting on the incomparable Argentinean beef every day. It is always served sizzling hot directly from the charcoal or burning wood and while Luba rips into her big plates of red meat I pop the wine corks. It’s well known that Argentina has the best beef and I'm slowly coming round to the opinion that it has the best red wine as well.

After today’s session and based on some of the models I have met so far, I can see that Argentina's colorful heritage has treated the women here nicely too. Tomorrow I have booked the model on photo #13 and #14 from yesterday’s casting. She is a very cute, petite girl, and previously a face of L’Oreal in Argentina.

Be back tomorrow for more.

Pushing the Envelope

Pushing the Envelope

As far as I can see, there are two types of exhaustion. That type when nothing goes right, when the worlds against you and you just want to go home.

And then there's the other type, when everything goes so right you're tired and happy and even nostalgic for the day that's just gone.

I had started to have really good feelings about this trip last night, but the fact that I am sitting here now, happily exhausted, feeling even better than yesterday, is way beyond my expectations.

Can it get better? I think so!

Let me introduce you to Caro, a girl who will drive a hole through your emotional life and set your heart ablaze. She is the former face of L’Oreal in Argentina, and posing nude for the first time in her life, she sent an electric pulse down my shooting arm and made my camera click like crazy. It is very rare that I have such an efficient day.

We started out in the studio, moved on to a Parisian-style apartment, and ended the session back at the Faena Hotel with Caro immersed in the tub. Fantastic. I have shared several examples from the shoot, so pause awhile with today's photo diary and you'll find twenty intimate inside peeks from the production and like a fly on the wall you can see where the shoot led us, step by step! Caro will be an instant hit, I just know it!

Saying Goodbye to Buenos Aires

Saying Goodbye to Buenos Aires

After yesterday’s spectacular day with Caro, it was actually a little hard to get started again with a new model.

Nude photography for me is about creating an atmosphere of complete trust and positive energy. That is what makes the shoot real, brings it alive, and without it photography would just become a practical process which everybody can of course do.

So, you get over it. Being our last production day, I charged up my sore camera and went head on with 18-year-old Yola; an inexperienced, sweet, and eager to please model from a local agency.

This was her first commercial job. She was charming, but clumsy, too, and I couldn't help smiling over her eagerness. Her figure was not fully developed with a little bit of baby fat still visible. So to be honest, I made it easy for her and for me as well. We only shot in the hotel room; some simple sessions using backgrounds I had not used on the trip so far, and then called it a day.

Now it was time to celebrate what had turned out to be a highly successful trip to Argentina. Luba and I had invited our new friends to dinner and we met at the stylish 'El Living' in the hotel. The people of Buenos Aires have a philosophical air about them and we had learned that they are happy to share their ideas and their secrets as long as you relate your own stories in return.

We ordered the best red wines in the building, a huge plate of country cheeses that made my tongue curl with delight, and lived our last hours here in this fantastic city to the fullest.

Muchos Gracias Argentina! Ciao Baby!

exhibition in barcelona
hello Petter, i really like your pictures of luba and the exhibition in barcelona was just great. simple and stylis.. but let me tell you without hurting your feelings , i did not like the framework. before you tell me, that this simple look was on purpose, be sure i know that but something different, just like your work style, would have been given a more special impresson to these masterpieces. what i'm doing i not so usual - i'm happy for that - and that is the reason i send this response to you. i am a frame artis and if you are interested in my work, or you think we can work together at your next exhibition i'll be glad to go further with this. regards sonny szekely
Hola
Congratulations! es muy buena
Congratulations!
You must be so proud, Petter. It looks like a fantastic exhibition, and I wish I could be there. Barcelona is one of my favorite cities anywhere, and to see one of your exhibitions would make the visit perfect. You are obviously in love with Luba--mind, body, and soul--and I thank you for sharing your vision of her with the rest of us. I love seeing a photo on display and knowing that it's from the same series as the first picture of her I ever saw. (You don't forget the first time you see Luba.) Best of luck to you both; you obviously deserve it. - Jackson
Luba in Barcelona
I am so pleased for you (both), and I wish you every success with your Exhibition. Luba as a model is one in a million, and you as a potographer of the female human form are also one in a million. NEVER, EVER succumb to any pressurwe to include males in your photo sessions. K.P.

Eva Peron Nude
Hi Ravic. I base my statement above on various serious articles on the net. Here is an example: Whether Eva prostituted herself or not has never been substantiated. Critics of the government in the late 40's and early 50's claimed they had pornographic photos of the young Eva, but none ever materialized. What is known is that Eva did have a succession of lovers which aided her in getting better parts in the theater. Survival and hunger can be a powerful factor in allowing one to trade favors of sex for better acting roles. Eva was not above that. One lover that did wonders for Eva's career was her relationship with the owner of Argentina's leading film magazine, Emilio Kartulovic. Eva benefitted much from this relationship and finally roles that were always closed to her began to flood in. From then on hunger disappeared. There are also many stories spinning on how she bought up complete print runs of mags featuring her semi nude to clean up her past before marrying Mr. Peron...

Hi.Nelson and Pablo are right.I agree with them.We cannot pay for this beautiful site.Perhaps you can do something. Two for the price of one. This is something any argentinian will understand. If Evita did nudes, try to find one and post it for the world.Regards.Ravic

Next time visit us in summer
Hi Petter. Cold weather? I've already warned you we are in winter. ;-) Perhaps next time you come to Argentina you chose summer, and please let me know that a few months before so I could find a good model here in Rosario (the city of the most beautiful girls in Argentina, still very shy). And please don't go to Bs.As. there are a lot of very beautiful places in Argentina with pretty landscapes. Pablo and Nelson are right, to be a member of your site is very expensive for us. So I'll try to win the photo contest in NEW NUDE to have a free pass to see your (excellent I suppose) work with Argentinean girls. Regards Ramiro (amateur photographer) , Rosario, Argentina
Huh?
Wow Petter, tomorrow is a new day, and you always seem to pull something out of your hat; no matter how bad it may seem...GOOD LUCK!

Sass
Sass can mean a lot of things, but here are the two most common meanings: 1. Lively and spirited; jaunty. 2. Stylish; chic If you think of the word sassy then you have the right idea though both are commonly used.

Hi, Petter, Have you ever been in Puerto Rico???? One fact to tease you; We have 4 (four) Miss Universe winners. Not many places have that many. People say that our women are very special and beautiful. Im an amateur photographer (hoping to get pro very soon) who likes to shoot models and ordinary girls alike. I admire your work, and helps me to learn how to better shoot women. If you ever plan to come here, let me know to see how can i help you. I can bet this will be another great experience for you. Sincerely, Jan
Next destination - Lithuania? It's been too long, already missing lithuanian beauties!

life is a wheel turning. i left shooting photografs as nobody was paying me and started working for a bank. now, since 15 years, i am a wine importer. still working for pleasure, trying to transmit emotions. i like your pictures and the contact within you, your girlfriend and the models. i beleive you've done a great deal and taking a great pleasure for your life that your website users do not see. anyway, good job. bravo. if you will have the chance to come to switzerland let me know. sam
